TRAVEL AND EXPLORATION NOTES

Mrs. Harkness Comes and Goes: Mrs. Ruth Harkness, widow of the late Mr. W. H. Harkness and famous as the woman explorer who succeeded in securing and taking safely to America the first living giant panda to leave the shores of China, arrived in Shanghai on August 12, her object being to visit the Tibetan border once more to secure a mate for Su Lin, the female giant panda she previously secured.

She stayed at the Palace Hotel, which was bombed on August 14, fortunately for her while she was out of the building. The acute situation in this part of China rendering all possibility of getting up country by way of the Yangtze out of the question, Mrs. Harkness, not to be deflected from her purpose, left Shanghai on the "Aramis" on August 21, with the object of reaching West China by way of Hanoi and Yunnan Province. She was to have met Mr. Quentin Young somewhere in South China and proceed on her enterprise with him as her guide; but so far no news has been received in Shanghai as to the progress of this venture.
